Round 1 Preview: Office Mates or Office Greats?

Already in the first round, two of the battles fought in this year’s EiPSI Open will be decided: two players will be able to call themselves the best tennis players of MF 6.65 and 6.74, respectively.

Uniquely in this year’s edition, the two office-mate clashes between Dion Boesten and Antonino Simone (MF 6.65) and between Vinh Bui and Sunder Rao (MF 6.74) will already take place in the first round. Boesten, a semi-finalist in 2011, will be able to fall back on a lot of practice experience while trying to depose of Simone, whose best result was a quarter-final spot in the same year. Although Bui and Rao expect a “very predictable [game]” in their battle for MF 6.74 champion: spectators are still left in the dark about who is favoured by this prediction.

Elsewhere in the first round, Jerry den Hartog starts his comeback in EiPSI competition after last year’s mysterious injury with a match against Jan-Willem Knopper, who will try to get his first game on the board at the third try.

2011 champion Berry Schoenmakers [3] faces Meilof Veeningen. Schoenmakers, remarking that “nothing is ever certain at the EiPSI Open”, said that he “will prepare well to get through this first round”. Even though all their previous encounters were on the Mykonos hard-court, still the head-to-head record favours the third seed.

Thijs Laarhoven and Sebastiaan de Hoogh battle it out for a quarter-final spot in the bottom-right part of the draw. De Hoogh got to the quarters before in 2011 before losing to eventual winner Berry Schoenmakers. Laarhoven met eventual winner Stan Korzilius already in the first round of the 2012 edition, and will be anxious to get his first win.

Finally, fourth seed Milan Petkovic, who displayed solid match-play tennis to reach the 2011 and 2012 semi-finals, faces first-time participant Ali Mehrabi in his opening match. Tipped by many to be a contender for the title, he first has to face the difficult prospect of having to play an unknown quantity: always a good test of character.

The first-round matches will be played on August 26-27: stay tuned for results and match reports!
