Two players with a temper faced each other today, as Dion Boesten defeats Jerry den Hartog 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Whereas all the screams came from just one man in yesterday’s semi, today both players were quite vocally present, screaming from delight at good points — or, more likely, from frustration at mishits. It made for an entertaining match, that was also probably the highest level that this tournament has seen so far.
Dion, aiming to extend his unbeaten run from the Shaile and Metzpoint Opens, got off to a good start to race to a 5-2 lead. Jerry was not to be disposed of so easily though, as he took the next four to give himself a chance to serve it out at 6-5. It was not to be for the man from Amsterdam though, as Dion broke back to force a breaker, which he duly took 7 to 4.
In the second set, Jerry got his chances, but he was now making just a few too many mistakes at the net, and Dion took the second set 6-2 to set up a final with Stan Korzilius. Korzilius beat him decisively back in 2012, but given Dion’s good from, EiPSI can remain hopeful that the trophy can finally come home again after two year of non-EiPSI winners. The final will likely be played tomorrow afternoon, stay tuned!
Day 4 As It Happened
19:10 There we are again, and it has been an eventful afternoon so far. There was no separating the two as the first set went to a breaker
19:12 Dion took it for a 1-0 lead, but directly had to admit break points on serve, which he overcame. Jerry also held, and we’re LIVE now at 1-1.
19:14 Both players are definitely emotionally involved, to say the least, as screams, mostly of frustration, are to be headed from both sides
19:15 But it’s quite a high quality encounter — probably the best match of the tournament. Jerry was a big unknown for this year, but doing well!
19:20 Having said that, Dion has just broken him for a 3-2 lead!
19:27 Just a few too many mistakes from Jerry at the net.. And Dion is making them count. And with a bit of a drifter he makes it 5-2
19:31 Can Dion serve it out? Two match points, but Jerry saves one!
19:34 But second time lucky. Dion is through to defend the EiPSI honour against Stan tomorrow
